Case Method Workshop: Teaching with Cases & Writing Cases

"Training-Action" Workshop Program that involves a Combination of Theoretical Learning and Practical Application with Simulations.

Introduction

The case method, introduced in the late 19th century and later adapted to organizational contexts by Harvard, is widely used in higher education, especially in management. It presents real or fictional cases and guides learners through a structured process.

Learners actively engage by analyzing the situation, identifying issues and stakeholders, and proposing decisions. The teacher acts as a facilitator, managing stages and fostering group interaction.

This method simulates real-world challenges, encouraging learners to navigate complex, incomplete information, identify key issues, and offer recommendations.

Objectives

The training workshops have three objectives:

  • Introduce the case method through practice, aiming to facilitate the transfer of skills to each participant.
  • Gain familiarity with the methodology specific to facilitating teaching case studies.
  • Work on the process of writing cases, enabling participants to write and have their own case studies tailored to their needs and their economic and organizational context.

The workshop on case facilitation is an essential step for the successful progress of the workshop on writing teaching case studies. This is crucial for the thorough assimilation of various aspects and for better achievement of the objectives.

At the end of the training, participating teachers will be guided to work on their own case studies by initiating the drafting of case projects.

Methodology

Phase 1: Teaching with cases (case facilitation)
The seminar, designed as a training-action, will immerse participants in various roles—facilitator, learner, and team member—to understand and adopt the case method. Experiential learning materials, including diverse cases, will simulate real learning scenarios. Activities will progress from individual readings to team discussions, consultations, and a plenary session for questions, debates, and recommendations. Each case study will conclude with key learning points, while the first phase will end with a synthesis of the methodological principles of teaching through the case method.
Phase 2: Writing a Teaching Case Study
The seminar will guide participants in deconstructing the cases used to explore their elements, forms, and styles, providing insights into case writing. Together, we will identify both direct needs (writing, standards, submission, and publication) and indirect needs (information gathering and partnerships with field experts). Participants will then work in teams or pairs to draft a case based on a real situation, structuring a narrative and experimenting with common stylistic techniques. Phase 2 will conclude with the design of a case creation project, documented for the trainer's review.
